Where Are They Now?
Ever wondered what happened to former Girvan winners?

Paul Curran - 1984, 1985, 1995
Followed his first two Girvan wins with victory for England in the 1986 Commonwealth Games Road Race at Edinburgh. Ten years later Paul was forced to retire from racing after sustaining a serious back injury in a road race. He now owns a luxury stretched limousine business in his native north east of England.

Doug Dailey - 1973
Won his second British RR Championship in 1976. On retiring from racing in 1986, Doug was BCF National Coach for 10 years working as team manager for Great Britain and England at World Champs, Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Now in the post of Logistics Manager with British Cycling, Doug's success in the role was recognised with the award of an MBE in 2008.

Tony Doyle - 1981, 1982
Took his second World Professional Individual Pursuit title for Great Britain in 1986. He had a highly sucessful career on the six-day track circuit winning 23 races. In 1989 Tony received an MBE for services to cycling. He was one of the founders and Event Director of the revived Tour of Britain stage race in 2004. Currently has a variety of business interests including a project to resurrect the London Six Day Race.

Andy Ferry - 1987
Went on to 'enjoy' a long term as last Scot to win the Girvan! Represented Scotland in the 1990 Commonwealth Games in the 100km TTT narrowly missing a medal by one place. Now lives in Ayrshire and can often be seen at the roadsides each Easter cheering on the Girvan riders.

Des Fretwell - 1978, 1979
Represented Great Britain in the 100kms Team Time Trial at the 1980 Moscow Olympics finishing ninth. Now runs the production side of the successful family print and design business in West Yorkshire.

Simon Lillistone - 1992
Represented Great Britain for the second time at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Simon is now British Cycling's Marketing Communications Director.

Dave Lloyd - 1983
Took the RTTC 25 mile time trial championship later in '83 as well as the RTTC 50 mile time trial record. Won the Tour of Ulster four day in 1984. Dave finally retired from competitive cycling in 1987 with a plethora of record, championships and other wins under his belt. 'Lloydy' now runs a respected coaching business in Cheshire.

Bill Nickson - 1975
Went on to win the two week Milk Race, the amateur Tour of Britain, in 1976. Won the UK Professional Road Race Championship in 1981. Owns a cycle shop in Leyland, Lancashire which is now run by his son, Bill Nickson jnr.

Shane Sutton - 1988
After his Girvan win Shane finished tenth in the '88 Milk Race - a precursor to winning it overall in 1990 for Keith Lambert's Banana - Falcon team. Currently Head Coach with British Cycling and part of the success story that is the GB Cycling Team.

Dave Williams - 1996
Runs his own bikes and accessories import and distribution agency on Merseyside.

Sean Yates - 1980
Turned professional in 1982 and went on to race on the European Pro circuit for 15 years gaining a palmares that most can only dream of. Sean returned to Ayrshire to win the British Professional RR title in Kilmarnock in 1992. Held the yellow jersey in the 1994 Tour de France. Currently working as Sports Director with the Astana Pro Cycling Team.
