Safety Advice for Other Road Users
The cyclists and their support vehicles are preceded by vehicles with amber warning lights and warning notices displaying "Caution! Cycle Race". When you see one of these vehicles approaching please be prepared to slow down and/or stop for a few minutes.

At certain times the race may be escorted by officers of Strathclyde Police and/or Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary. Additionally, police officers and traffic wardens may also be on duty in towns and at strategic road junctions along the route. Our team of civilian Motorcycle Marshals may also offer advice to motorists regarding race conditions.
  • Please follow any instructions given by police officers or traffic wardens. Please heed any advice offered by our Motorcycle Marshals. Their aim is to ensure the safety of the competitors and other road users alike.
  • In most cases any police motorcyclists escorting the race will direct oncoming traffic to slow down and keep well in to the left of the road. However, in certain circumstances, police officers may direct drivers to pull off the road and wait in lay-bys, passing places etc. Use hazard warning lights when appropriate.
  • The cyclists may be in one large group or may have split into several separate groups. Therefore, you may be given instructions/advice by police officers or motorcycle marshals on more than one occasion.
  • Please reduce your speed and/or wait until the cyclists and race support vehicles following each group have passed. When the main group of cyclists and their following support vehicles have passed you it is advisable to proceed with care for a few miles as you may encounter groups of stragglers on the road.
  • If you are driving behind the race, please be patient and wait for a safe opportunity if you must overtake. A few short warning blasts on your vehicle's horn just before passing the cyclists is advisable. The decision to overtake is yours and you must be satisfied that the manoeuvre is safe before attempting to pass. Again, please follow the instructions/advice of any police officers or motorcycle marshals present.
Thank you for taking the time to visit this page. If you do encounter the race we hope you will enjoy the spectacle. Please accept our apologies for any delay to your journey.

Safety Advice for Spectators
There are no admission charges on any of the stages of the Girvan Cycle Race and spectators are very welcome to watch the race on any, or all, of the four stages.

In common with most other sporting events that take place on the open highway, there is a certain amount of risk to participants and the general public alike. That said however, the race has a good safety record. Please help us to avoid unnecessary accident or injury by following these guidelines:
  • Drivers - please arrive at your intended spectating point/s early enough to find suitable parking. Please park considerately and off the route (e.g. in a lay-by or side road) if at all possible. If you must park on the race route please do this on the opposite side of the carriageway from that the riders will be traveling along.
  • Drivers - at the stage finish area please observe any 'No Waiting' cones as well as any normal parking restrictions that may apply. The stage finish areas have ample 'off route' parking within easy walking distance of the finish line. Please park considerately without blocking access to homes or businesses.
  • Dog owners - please keep your pet on its lead until all the competitors and race vehicles have passed. Racing cyclists can ride at speeds of up to 40 mph and animals are often un-nerved by large groups of cyclists passing at high speed.
  • Parents - please keep young children under control as they too can become excited by the spectacle of the race.
  • Mind those toes! Please stand on the footpath or roadside verge at all times when the race is passing. Stand behind any crowd control barriers, tapes or ropes present - they are there for your safety.
  • Photographers - please do not stand in the road when trying to get good shots. This is not only dangerous but is unlikely to produce a pleasing photo. There are plenty of suitable vantage points around the route which, with a little forward planning, offer better opportunities for great action shots.
  • Please follow any instructions given by Police officers and Race Marshals. Our team of civilian Motorcycle Marshals who travel with the race may also offer advice to spectators on safety related matters. Please don't be offended - our marshals are all unpaid volunteers and their only aim is to ensure the safety of race participants and the general public alike.
Thank you for taking the time to visit this page. We trust you will have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
