Using This Website

Site Navigation:
The site is designed to be navigated using the main menu bar which is located near the top of each page. This gives access to the main sections of the website. With the exception of the 'Home' button a sub-menu will open when you 'mouse-over' each main section button. Move the mouse pointer down to highlight a sub-menu item and click on the highlighted text to go to the desired page.

The main menu bar is in the form of a graphical image and works using a computer scripting language called Javascript. If your web browser does not support Javascript, or if Javascript has been disabled on your PC, you may have difficulty using the main menu. Some pop-up blockers may also prevent the menu from displaying. The Javascript used to create the main menu does not pose a threat to your PC and is safe to use.

The text 'breadcrumbs' trail directly beneath the main menu bar indicates the section and page of the site in which you are currently located. On this page for example, the trail is: 'Girvan Cycle Race > Site Map > Help > Using This Website:'

To return to the Home Page at any time do one of the following:-
  • Click the 'Home' button on the main menu bar
  • Click the 'Girvan Cycle Race' banner at the head of each page
  • Click the 'Home' hypertext link near the bottom of each page
Site Map:
If you can't see the main menu bar for any reason you can navigate using the Site Map which can be accessed at any time from the hypertext links near the top and bottom of each page. The Site Map is constructed using hypertext links only and does not use graphics.

PDF Files:
This website is constructed using standard HTML web pages. Additionally, extensive use is made of files in Portable Document Format (a.k.a. Adobe Acrobat). Where hypertext links relate to PDF files this will be noted alongside the link. The file size will also be shown to assist users with narrowband Internet access.

To view these files you will require to have appropriate PDF reader software installed on your computer. Adobe Reader is the original and most popular PDF reader and it can be downloaded free of charge from Adobe's website.

Most PDF reading software will allow, or can be set up to allow, PDF files to open in your browser. You can also download a PDF file to your computer for off-line viewing by right clicking on its hypertext link and choosing the appropriate 'save' command. See your PDF software's Help for further information on setting it up for Internet use.

Why are PDF Files Used?
Invented by Adobe Systems, the Portable Document Format (PDF) allows information from any printable software application to be captured and viewed, on any computer system, and shared with anyone around the world. While special software is required to create PDF files, they can be viewed, online or offline, using free PDF reader software which is pre-installed on many computer systems.

We use various software applications to produce Girvan Cycle Race documentation e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and a bespoke race results programme. By publishing documents in PDF format we can ensure that everyone has access to them regardless of the software applications they have installed on their computer.

Previous versions of Adobe's PDF viewing programme were called 'Adobe Acrobat Reader'. Our PDF documents can be read with Acrobat Reader version 5 or greater. The latest version, now branded 'Adobe Reader', can be downloaded free of charge at Adobe's website or wherever you see the 'Get Adobe Reader' button shown below.

How Quickly are Race Results Published on the Website?
The race results team and web manager are all unpaid volunteers and most of us have several jobs to do during the event. However, we do publish the stage results just as soon as possible. Of course, we can't publish the full result of a stage until the judges have compiled it and, with up to 120 riders to place on each stage, that can take some time.

We aim to publish the 'headline placings' for each stage on the website without delay. Once the full result becomes available it will be published as a PDF and/or MS Excel download at the earliest opportunity.

As we are working away from home over race weekend we have to rely on a 'borrowed' Internet connection and there may be a delay before that becomes available to us. We try to get results up on the website as soon as possible but hope you will understand that, given the limitations outlined above, it may not be as quickly as you would wish.
